REPORT: SPIREITES FINALLY KICKSTART THEIR SEASON

Torquay were the visitors at the Proact this Saturday as the Spireites continued to search for their first victory of the season. Sheridan made the controversial decision to drop Fondop and bring in fan favourite Denton after his return from injury. Anthony Gerrard missed the match through injury and so Will Evans took the armband.

The early action of the game was in the Torquay box, when just two minutes in Boden found space and just headed a falling ball wide as the defenders stood and watched.

Just seconds later Torquay attacked in numbers and the right winger squared the ball across the Chesterfield box but Duku could only shoot wide.

As we just passed the twelve minute mark Weston dinked a loose ball over the top of the Torquay defence and Boden let it bounce over his shoulder and half volleyed his chance into the bottom corner as calm as you like to put Town one nil up.

Chesterfield began to grow in confidence in front of their home crowd and on the fifteen minute mark Joe Rowley shot from range after some good build up play but he couldn’t test Covolan in the Torquay goal.

Eighteen minutes gone and a Mandeville corner found Denton but his header was cleared off the line.

Five minutes before the break Rowley and Mandeville linked up on the edge of the box and Mandeville forced a fine save out of Covolan.

Spireites went into the break with a one nil lead and they showed a lot more desire and creativity than previous matches. The midfield took control of the game and created a few chances for the two strikers and the defence grew in confidence as the  half went on.

Ten minutes into the second half Rowley raced into the box and was brought down but no penalty was given despite protest from fans and players.

As the second half went on Town began to tire which was shown as Torquay started to get more time and space on the ball but the defence held strong.

As the four minutes of additional time was announced Reid was put through on goal but a determined Will Evans got back and put in a perfect last ditch tackle to deny a one on one opportunity.

After some winding down of the clock the referee brought proceedings to an end with Scott Boden’s first half goal gifting the Spireites their first three points of the season. Overall a brilliant performance with desire and effort throughout the team and now Sheridan and his squad will look to keep improving for their trip to Sutton.
