REPORT: SPIREITES EDGE PAST MATLOCK

Matlock played hosts to Chesterfield as the Spireites played their third pre season friendly at Causeway Lane. Sheridan brought a young side containing a few trialists, including Anthony Spyrou.

In the third minute Pieteu Crouz scored for the Gladiators after Chesterfields young defence couldn’t clear the ball, Dan Wallis in the Chesterfield goal didn’t stand a chance.

McKay and Scriven linked up well around the Matlock box on the ten minute mark but McKay was unable to guide the ball on target.

Spireites won a corner in the 14th minute which young Jay Sheridan took and directed towards trialist Spyrou, who headed the ball into the back of the net, out jumping the Matlock defenders.

Heading towards 30 minutes played McKay pounced on a defensive error and forced Stewart into making a good save.

Just seconds later Matlock went up the other end as Louis Wardle slammed Dan Wallis’s post.

With just 8 minutes of the first half left right back, Jake Bennet found himself in the box and was passed to by McKay, he eventually took it round the keeper and finished the move off with a composed finish.

The Spireites went into the break with a 2-1 lead via goals from Bennet and Spyrou.

Just after the break McKay found space in the box, his header from close range forced a very good save out of Stewart.

Ben Gordon found space in the Chesterfield defence with 20 minutes to go also getting off a shot but Dan Wallis denied his effort.

Players started to get tired as we entered the final 10 minutes and Crouz bruised the Chesterfield bar with a powerful attempt.

The Spireites saw out the game and came away with a 2-1 victory to carry on Chesterfield’s pre season un-beaten run.
