John Sheridan Pre Halifax Town

Ahead of the Spireites visit of Halifax Town, John Sheridan has been speaking to Spire Media, reflecting on the FA Trophy defeat, new signings and an injury update.

On Saturday Chesterfield were knocked out of the FA Trophy to National League North side Brackley Town, as Sheridans’ men lost 2-0 at the Proact.

“The team I picked was a team I thought could go out and win the game for us.

“I gave one or two the opportunity to play in the game, obviously it didn’t work out.

“It was a poor performance. They looked sharper all over the pitch; we didn’t create too many problems for them to deal with.”

Chesterfield now see themselves in a position where they have games in hand over fellow relegation strugglers, but Sheridan says his players shouldn’t feel any extra pressure.

“You’ve just got to forget about the bad performance and move on.

“The most important thing now is that we look ahead to Halifax.”

With three new signings coming in since the Spireites’ last league game, Sheridan hopes that Boden, Yarney and McKay can all add something to the squad.

“They didn’t come here to sit and watch, they will be involved.

“Hopefully they can push the other players too, in training and in games, week in week out.”

The Spireites boss also described Jack McKay as a young, fast player with a lot of potential. He also added that he can play down the middle or on either wing.

Sheridan also stated that every player is fit and ready to play.

“Marco [Fortune], Barry and Weir have trained.

“Laurence [Maguire] and Charlie [Carter] played in a behind closed doors game on Tuesday and came through that well.”

When asked about his striking options, Sheridan says he’ll keep his options open.

“I’ve got a lot of options, Marco’s done well, Scott coming in and Denton’s different to the other two.

“If Denton plays, I want him to score goals and cause havoc, if not then I want my other players to come on and prove to me why they should be in the team.”

As for Saturday, Chesterfield will take on Halifax Town on Saturday at the Proact. Sheridan expects a tough game.

“They’re like us; they’ve drawn a lot of games. If they turned a couple of those draws into wins they’d be 10 places higher up the table.

“They’ve got some good players and some experienced pros.

“I’m a different manager, I’ll approach the game differently.

“It’ll be tight, we’re near the bottom and they’re not too far above us, a win would help us get a bit closer to them.”

With the Spireites still sitting in the relegation zone, this game is must win. A win on Saturday could see Chesterfield move up to 18th in the National League and out of the relegation zone.
