Spireites Pull Off Heroic Comeback In Game For The Ages



After the Spireites'  2-2 draw with Solihull Moors on new years, Caretaker boss John Pemberton named an unchanged side against 9th placed Ebbsfleet United.

1 minute in and the Hosts were showing they meant business, Jonathan Smith hit a long range shot, after a good passage of play between him and Weston however, his effort was matched by Ashmore in the Ebbsfleet goal, who saved the shot comfortably.

The Visitors had their first chance on 16 minutes after a really dangerous counter attack, Chris Bush whipped in a cross to Cody McDonald, Cody rose above Evans and just headed the ball over the bar.

In the 21st minute the Visitors were awarded a penalty, Cody Mcdonald was put through on goal, went one on one with Burton, McDonald knocked it past Callum Burton and then fell over, and some how Ebbsfleet were awarded a penalty. Michael Cheek took the penalty and side-footed it into the bottom right corner  - sending Burton in the Spireites' net the wrong way, to make it 1-0 to the Fleet.

Chesterfield's Tom Denton replaced the injured Jamie Sharman on 34 minutes.

On 40 minutes Ebbsfleet doubled their lead, Cody McDonald got on the end of a through ball on the right hand side, from Ebou Adams, McDonald got in front of Haydn Hollis and turned into space in the box and hit the shot across Burton and into bottom corner, to make it 2-0 to the Fleet.

The Fourth Official indicated a minimum of 3 additional minutes to be played.

The Visitors added another goal, Bagasan Graham skipped past Barry and drilled a shot past Burton, beating him at his near post to make the score 3-0.

Half time finished 3-0 to Ebbsfleet.

The Hosts made one change at half time, Alfie Beestin made way for Robbie Weir.

The half resumed and the Spireites almost pulled a goal back, Binnom-Williams whipped a ball to the back post, Nathan Ashmore came to collect the cross but spilled it to Shaw, who shot was cleared off the line.

Attendance 4123 including 177 Ebbsfleet fans.

On 64 minutes the Spireites pulled a goal back, Brad Barry Curled a cross into the box on his left foot, the cross met the head of Tom Denton, who directed the header into the top right corner, to make it 1-3 to Ebbsfleet.

Bradley Barry was replaced Kyel Reid in the 74th minute.

The Hosts were really starting to put pressure on the Fleet and in the 76th minute, Kyel Reid whipped a ball in back post from a corner, the cross met the head of Haydn Hollis, who hit a bullet header which looked to be going in however, goalkeeping heroics from Nathan Ashmore kept his header out of the net.

82 minutes and the Spireites' come-back was on, after a scramble in the box, the ball fell to Marc Antione Fortune who slotted the ball under the keeper and into the net, to make it 2-3.

The Fourth Official indicated a minimum of 6 additional minutes added time.

In the 90th minute the Spireites pulled off their heroic come-back, Kyel Reid dipped in a cross to the back post to Will Evans who smashed the header into the top corner.

This crazy match took a crazy turn, Callum Burton was being blocked off by the Ebbsfleet forward and he swung out, leading to a red card. The Spireites had used all their substitutions so Will Evans had to step up and go in net for the penalty, Cheek took the penalty and miraculously saved it too conclude full time as Chestefield 3 Ebbsfeet 3, capping off a crazy game for the ages.
