Sheridan Pre Brackley Town

Ahead of his sides FA Trophy fixture against Brackley Town, Spireites boss John Sheridan has been speaking to Spire Media.

When asked about last Saturday’s home draw with Barrow, Sheridan believes his side created chances which should have been converted.

“We started brightly, creating two big chances.

“We are where we are and we’re there for a reason.

“The players are always going to give me effort; it’s about having that cuteness further up the pitch.”

This week 29 year old striker Scott Boden rejoined Chesterfield, for an undisclosed fee from National League rivals Gateshead. Boden previously spent five years with the blues and was a part of Sheridan’s title winning squad in 2011.

“He was a young lad coming through the ranks when I was first here and I always thought he was technically very good.

“When he got chances he usually took them.”

Sheridan has also been full of praise for Chairman Dave Allen, who he says has allowed him to spend the money necessary to keep Chesterfield in the National League.

“He’s given me the license to get the players I want, but it’s also important I bring in the right players.”

The Spireites have also completed Deadline Day deals for Newcastle defender Josef Yarney and Cardiff striker Josh McKay, who join on loan deals until the end of the season.

It has also been announced this week that defender Laurence Maguire has signed a new deal with the club that will see him stay for another two-and-a-half years.

“I’m very pleased. I like the look of what I’ve seen of him in training.

“He’s still a young player, he’s still learning. He’s one that I think I can make better.”

Young striker Luke Rawson returned to Sheffield FC on loan this week, but with the 17 year old recently signing his first professional deal, Sheridan sees him as one for the future.

“He’s got an edge to him, which I like in a player.

“He’s gone to Sheffield to get some experience in men’s football. He’s got to make the step up now.”

As for Saturday, Chesterfield face a visit from National League North side Brackley Town, the current holders of the FA Trophy.

“They’re the holders, they’re doing well in their league.

“For them to win the trophy last year will be a massive boost for them, so we’ve got to give them credit.

“I’m expecting a tough game, but at the same time I’m expecting us to win the game.”
